Environmental Excellence, Practised

How Specialist’s renewable energy, responsible sourcing and sustainable manufacturing systems support Excellence in Everything.

Environmental responsibility is not separate from how Specialist works.

It sits inside the decisions the business makes every day: how materials are sourced, how energy is used, how waste is managed, how production is planned and how projects are delivered.

Specialist’s environmental journey began in 1990 with the purchase of forestry land. Since then, the business has continued to invest in practical measures that reduce impact and support more responsible manufacturing. That includes renewable electricity, solar energy, biomass heating, lean manufacturing, responsible timber certification and zero waste policies.

For a manufacturing-led fit-out business, that matters.

Clients need more than broad sustainability claims. They need evidence. They need to know that the businesses behind complex interior packages have systems, accreditations and processes that support responsible delivery.

That is where Specialist’s Environmental Excellence Strategy becomes part of Excellence in Everything.

Renewable Energy in Practice

Renewable energy has been central to Specialist’s environmental strategy for years.

In 2017, Specialist installed a 150kWp solar panel system at its manufacturing facility, generating 127,500kWh of energy annually, with 90% used to power factory operations. From March 2020, all electricity used by the business came from renewable sources.

The move to locally generated green electricity strengthened that commitment.

Through a partnership with 3T Power, Specialist transitioned to a fully green electricity supply generated in Northern Ireland. The partnership was expected to reduce carbon output from the manufacturing facility by more than 360,000kg per year, while also supporting independent renewable electricity generators and the local economy.

As Ciarán O’Hagan, Managing Director of Specialist Group, said:

“At Specialist, we have a company-wide strategy to protect our environment. With a strong farming background and a love of the land and of nature, it makes sense to translate this into business practice also. The use of renewable energy has been at the heart of this strategy and the partnership with 3T closes the loop on all the environmental actions we have been taking to date in our environmental excellence plan.”

That line is important because it makes the strategy feel grounded.

This is not sustainability as a marketing layer. It is a practical business decision shaped by place, values and long-term responsibility.

Less Waste. More Control.

Specialist’s manufacturing operations also use a biomass boiler, in place since 2008, fuelled by waste timber from production. This helps heat Specialist HQ while making practical use of material generated through manufacturing.

Waste reduction is supported through wider operational systems.

Specialist has operated zero waste to landfill and zero environmental incidents policies since 2021. The business also uses material optimisation software to make better use of sheet materials across product outputs, improving efficiency and reducing waste in production.

This connects directly to lean manufacturing.

Specialist has embraced lean manufacturing principles since 2014, reviewing and improving processes to reduce non-value-add activity and improve project delivery efficiency. Its “Measure Twice, Cut Once” approach reflects the value of getting work right first time, especially at a weekly production value now recorded in excess of £500k in the current sustainability document.

Environmental performance and operational performance are linked.

Better planning means less waste.

Better material use means stronger efficiency.

Better process control means fewer avoidable issues.

Better manufacture supports better delivery.

Responsible Materials

Timber sits close to Specialist’s story.

The business began in joinery, and timber remains central to many of the interiors Specialist delivers. That makes responsible sourcing essential.

Specialist operates ISO 14001, FSC® and PEFC certification, helping support responsible procurement and contributing to project sustainability credentials under frameworks including LEED, BREEAM, SKA and WELL.

The business also operates a Sustainable Procurement Policy, guiding purchasing decisions so client requirements are met while wider environmental and community goals are considered. Its procurement team researches more sustainable alternative products, including water-based paints, stains and lacquers, and recycled or reclaimed materials.

For clients, this gives more confidence:

  • Materials are not selected in isolation.
  • Procurement is not treated as a back-office function.
  • Sustainability is not left to the end of the project.

It is built into the decision-making process.

Energy, Water and Everyday Efficiency

Environmental improvement depends on the big moves and the small controls.

Specialist monitors energy consumption across the business and has invested in variable speed drives on factory machinery, motion and light sensor systems, low-energy lighting and ongoing electricity and water monitoring. Water reduction is supported by low-flush toilets, aerated taps and workforce awareness through toolbox talks.

These details matter because they show environmental responsibility operating at factory level.

Not only policies.

Not only certificates.

Not only ambitions.

Working systems.

Everyday efficiency supports the bigger environmental strategy. It reduces unnecessary consumption, improves control and helps the business keep improving over time.

Supporting Local Green Power

The 3T Power partnership also added another important dimension: local impact.

By purchasing 100% renewable electricity generated in Northern Ireland, Specialist was able to support independent wind turbine operators as well as reduce the carbon output of its own manufacturing facility.

Shauna Forbes, Director of 3T Power, described the company’s role as connecting Specialist with local renewable generators so the organisation could meet its sustainability goals while also supporting the local economy.

That is a stronger story than simply buying green energy.

It connects environmental responsibility with local enterprise, independent generation and the wider Northern Ireland economy.

For Specialist, based in Maghera and built around long-term local employment, that connection feels right.

Biodiversity and Better Places

Specialist’s commitment to the environment extends beyond the factory.

The business owns and maintains over 100 acres of forestry in County Fermanagh and has supported tree planting through the Woodland Trust. Earlier environmental plans also referenced biodiversity ambitions, including bee farming and extending solar generation.

The wider sustainability story now continues through initiatives such as woodland partnerships, tree planting, community activity and responsible sourcing.

This matters because environmental excellence is not only about carbon.

It is about resources, land, biodiversity, people and the places connected to the business.

Excellence That Reduces Impact

Specialist’s Environmental Excellence Strategy shows how sustainability becomes practical inside a manufacturing-led fit-out business:

  • Renewable electricity reduces energy impact.
  • Solar generation supports factory operations.
  • Biomass heating makes use of production waste.
  • Lean manufacturing improves efficiency.
  • FSC® and PEFC certification support responsible timber sourcing.
  • ISO 14001 gives structure and accountability.
  • Zero waste policies set clear expectations.
  • Material optimisation reduces avoidable waste.

Each action contributes to the same standard.

Excellence in Everything means making better decisions before work reaches site. It means using resources properly, managing waste carefully, choosing materials responsibly and building systems that keep improving.

Environmental excellence is not one initiative.

It is a way of working – measured through action, supported by evidence and carried through every stage of the business.
