Women at Specialist: Building Careers, Confidence and Better Teams

Women at Specialist

Building careers, confidence and better teams across a manufacturing-led fit-out business.

Excellence in Everything depends on everyone. Across Specialist, women play an important role in the standards, systems, decisions and delivery that keep the business moving. From board level and senior management to production, site, commercial, finance, marketing, people, operations and support roles, women contribute across the full structure of the business. Specialist has an above-industry-standard number of females working across all areas, including at board level, senior management, production and onsite. In a sector still often seen as male-dominated, that matters. It matters because visibility changes expectations. When women are seen leading, managing, making, coordinating and delivering, it challenges outdated assumptions about who belongs in construction, manufacturing and fit-out. It also shows younger people that there is more than one route into the industry, and more than one way to build a strong career within it.

Recognising the Contribution

International Women’s Day gives businesses a moment to recognise women, reflect on progress and keep important conversations visible. At Specialist, it has been marked in different ways over the years, both inside and outside the business. Each year has carried a different theme, including Choose to Challenge, Break the Bias and Invest in Women: Accelerate Progress. Those themes are useful because they point beyond one date in the calendar. They ask businesses to look at how opportunity is created, how people are supported and how culture is built in practice. For Specialist, that means recognising the contribution women make across the business every day – not only in expected roles, but in leadership, decision-making, production environments and onsite delivery. It also means creating space for conversations around confidence, wellbeing, resilience, bias, progression and support.

Support in Practice

Culture is not built through statements. It is built through what people experience. In 2023, Specialist marked International Women’s Day with a workshop led by Sarah Connell of Minding Me Psychologists. The session focused on work life, personal life, resilience and practical techniques to help people manage challenges and reach their potential. That kind of support reflects a wider point. People do better work when they feel respected, supported and able to develop. That applies across every role and every department. For Specialist, investing in people means looking beyond technical skill alone. It means supporting confidence, communication, wellbeing and progression, alongside the practical training and experience needed to build long-term careers.

Inside and Outside the Business

International Women’s Day has also been used as a way to connect internal recognition with wider community impact. Inside the business, it has created moments to recognise the women who help shape Specialist’s culture, delivery and standards. These have included team events, internal celebrations, wellbeing activity and gestures of appreciation across the company. Outside the business, Specialist has used the occasion to support others too. In 2024, the business supported local female-led companies through gifts for team members, recognising women in the wider business community as well as within Specialist. The team also connected International Women’s Day with fundraising activity, including support for Sands through the Walk 100km in March challenge. These actions are simple, but they are practical. They show that recognition does not need to stay inside the building. It can support local suppliers, raise awareness, contribute to charity and strengthen the connection between the business, its people and the wider community.

Careers Without Limits

A stronger industry needs visible pathways. That means showing women and girls that construction, manufacturing, interiors and fit-out offer real opportunities across a wide range of disciplines. Not every career in this industry starts on site. Not every role sits in the workshop. Specialist depends on design, estimating, project management, commercial control, finance, marketing, people, logistics, operations, production and installation all working together. That range creates opportunity. Specialist’s continued investment in apprenticeships, development, wellbeing and career progression supports that wider aim. It helps people build skills, gain confidence and see where their career could go. The business has grown because people have grown with it. That remains central to The Specialist Way: clear standards, shared responsibility, practical support and the belief that people should have the chance to learn, contribute and progress.

Excellence Built Together

Women at Specialist are part of the business because they are part of the work. They help set standards, solve problems, support teams, manage detail, deliver projects and shape culture. International Women’s Day gives us a moment to recognise that contribution, but the commitment does not begin or end there. Excellence in Everything is built through people: their skill, effort, ideas, accountability and care for the detail. And that standard belongs to everyone.
