At Specialist, sustainability is about more than targets and policies. It is about practical action that creates lasting environmental and social value.
That commitment began in 1990 with the purchase of forestry land, laying the foundations for a long-term approach that continues to shape the business today.
From renewable energy and waste reduction to responsible sourcing and biodiversity, sustainability is built into how we work.
One way that commitment is brought to life is through tree planting.
Working alongside the Woodland Trust, our employees and apprentices have helped restore natural habitats, support biodiversity and create a lasting environmental legacy for future generations.
In 2021, in partnership with Mix Interiors and the Woodland Trust, Specialist planted 1,400 native trees at Carnmoney Hill: one tree for every attendee at that year’s Mixology Awards.
The initiative helped strengthen the buffer around existing ancient woodland while creating valuable new habitats for local wildlife.
Since then, our apprentices have continued to take part in annual tree planting events, reinforcing Specialist’s long-term commitment to biodiversity and woodland restoration.
Working with the Woodland Trust, our teams have planted a diverse mix of native species, including alder, silver birch, hazel, pedunculate oak, sessile oak, wild cherry, rowan and Scots pine.
These species have been carefully selected to capture carbon, support biodiversity and help create healthier ecosystems for generations to come.
Specialist’s commitment extends beyond tree planting.
Through the Woodland Trust’s #EveryTreeCounts campaign, we’ve also donated £5,000 towards the conservation of the Ancient Woodland Project in the Faughan Valley, helping to protect and expand one of Northern Ireland’s most significant ancient woodland landscapes.
Our apprentices play a central role in every planting event, which makes the initiative especially meaningful.
The phrase “from little acorns, mighty oaks grow” reflects more than the trees we plant. It also reflects the people we invest in.
Just as young saplings develop into thriving woodlands, our apprentices continue to grow into the skilled craftspeople, designers and future leaders who will help shape the future of Specialist.
By involving them in sustainability initiatives early in their careers, we help build a practical understanding of environmental responsibility that can carry through their working lives.
