The visit gave the Overbury team an opportunity to meet more of our people and see how Specialist’s design expertise, manufacturing capability and technology come together.
Across our Maghera facilities, technical design, digital coordination, material knowledge and advanced manufacturing operate as part of one connected delivery process.
Seeing that process first-hand provides a different understanding of what sits behind a finished project.
Drawings explain the technical approach. Samples communicate materials and finish. Programmes set out what needs to happen and when. But walking through the facilities shows how information moves between departments, how complex elements progress into manufacture and how teams maintain control through to delivery and installation.
For a contractor delivering large and demanding fit-out programmes, that visibility matters. It builds confidence in the capability, capacity and people behind the package.
Time away from the programme
There was also time to move beyond factory processes and project requirements.
Practical challenges and informal conversations gave both teams space to get to know one another away from the immediate pressures of delivery. The Overbury team’s response to the visit reflected the impression made by Specialist’s people, the scale of the business and the welcome they received in Maghera.
These experiences have real value.
Complex projects depend on specifications, systems and careful coordination. But they also depend on trust: knowing the people involved, understanding how they work and being confident that an issue can be discussed openly when circumstances change.
Relationships built outside formal project meetings can make collaboration inside them considerably stronger.
An exceptional fundraising achievement
The visit followed another remarkable year for the Overbury Charity Quiz.
Led by David Duffy and Richard Goddard, the 2026 event raised an incredible £625,000 for 21 charities.
That result reflects an enormous amount of work behind the scenes, along with the generosity of businesses and individuals from across the fit-out industry.
Specialist’s auction bid forms one small part of that collective effort. It turns an opportunity to spend time together into direct financial support for organisations delivering vital work.
It also demonstrates what can happen when an industry network comes together around something larger than its own commercial interests.
The first Specialist View
David Duffy’s commitment to charity was also the subject of the first episode of The Specialist View.
Hosted by Specialist Group Managing Director Ciarán O’Hagan, the series was created to explore the knowledge, experiences and values of people across the industry.
As the first guest, David discussed his career in construction and the thinking behind Overbury’s charitable activity. The conversation brought a different dimension to the relationship between the businesses, creating room to discuss not only what the industry delivers, but what it can contribute.
It was a fitting place to begin.
Leadership is not measured solely through projects, programmes and commercial results. It can also be seen in how people use their relationships, energy and influence to help others.
Built on good work and shared values
Specialist and Overbury will continue to work together through the details and demands of fit-out delivery.
But the relationship is stronger because it does not stop there.
The projects build professional trust. The factory visits deepen understanding. The practical experiences strengthen personal connections. The Charity Quiz turns those relationships into meaningful support for communities.
That is the work beyond the work.
And it is how a partnership becomes something worth building for the long term.
