Managed with Excellence

Specialist Group’s Deloitte Best Managed Companies recognition reflects the structure, standards and long-term thinking behind the business.

Specialist Group has been named a first-time winner in the Deloitte Ireland Best Managed Companies Awards 2025.

The recognition places Specialist among a group of privately owned and managed businesses across Ireland and Northern Ireland assessed for more than short-term performance. Deloitte’s programme considers companies across strategy, capability, culture, governance, innovation, sustainability and financial performance. In 2025, 115 businesses achieved Best Managed status, with eight companies recognised as first-time winners, including Specialist Group.

For Specialist, the accolade is important because it reflects what the business has been building for years.

Not one project.

Not one award.

Not one strong trading period.

A complete and consistently effective working model.

One built around manufacturing capability, operational control, people development, sustainability, leadership and a clear standard: Excellence in Everything.

More Than an Award

The Deloitte Best Managed Companies programme recognises strong private businesses across the island of Ireland. The 2025 awards marked the 17th annual programme, with winners representing a broad range of sectors and a combined community of companies making a significant contribution to employment, growth and enterprise.

Specialist was named alongside other first-time winners including Actavo Group, Dixon International Logistics, Kirby Group Engineering, Marcon Fit-Out, Nostra Technologies, Ohk Energy and Suir Engineering.

That context matters.

Best Managed status is not about profile alone. It is a benchmark of how a business is run, how it plans, how it leads and how it continues to perform.

For a manufacturing-led fit-out business based in Maghera, delivering complex projects across the UK, Ireland and beyond, that recognition gives clients, partners and future employees another piece of evidence.

It shows Specialist is not only strong in delivery.

It is structured for long-term growth.

The Business Behind the Recognition

Specialist has grown from a team of ten in 1988 into a fully integrated group of more than 300 professionals working across the UK and Ireland. Its own brand platform describes that growth as being driven by a commitment to Excellence in Everything.

That growth has been shaped by deliberate investment.

The business has expanded from its joinery roots into an integrated fit-out offer across joinery, glass, metal, doors and Core. It has invested in people, manufacturing facilities, digital systems, sustainability, apprenticeships and leadership structures to support increasingly complex projects.

That is the real story behind the Deloitte recognition.

A well-managed business is not just busy. It has control.

It knows how work moves from early conversation to design development, manufacture, logistics, installation and handover. It understands where risk appears. It invests before capacity becomes a problem. It keeps standards visible as the business grows.

That is what Specialist has been building.

Capability with Control

Manufacturing capability is central to how Specialist delivers.

The business operates from a facility occupying more than three acres, with advanced machinery, office space, a 200-seat canteen, company gym and dedicated employee wellbeing suite. Its facilities page also records earlier investment of £3 million in production capacity and more than 80,000 sq ft of manufacturing space during the 2010s.

That scale gives Specialist the ability to support complex packages with greater control over programme, detail and consistency.

In a recent capacity update, Group Managing Director Ciarán O’Hagan described the investment clearly:

“We’ve significantly invested in our factory and storage space, our equipment, in recruitment and in software.”

The same update referenced Specialist’s integrated CRM/ERP project management system, The Specialist Way, designed to support project tracking from concept to completion.

This is where operational excellence becomes practical.

Clients are not only buying finished joinery, glass, metal or door packages. They are relying on systems, space, information, storage, people and process to keep complex work moving properly.

People Built Into the Model

A best-managed business has to invest in the people behind the work.

Specialist’s approach to people is visible across the business: from apprenticeships and development pathways to wellbeing facilities and long-term career progression.

The company’s history includes the establishment of the Specialist Academy, and its facilities include spaces designed around the people working in the business, including a canteen, gym and wellbeing suite.

This matters because Specialist’s standard is carried by people.

Machines increase capacity. Systems improve visibility. Facilities support scale.

But people protect the detail.

They understand materials. They coordinate with design teams. They resolve issues before they reach site. They carry knowledge from one project to the next.

That is why investment in people is not a soft message. It is part of operational performance.

Sustainability and Accountability

The Deloitte programme highlights sustainability and long-term business responsibility as part of what strong management looks like. Deloitte noted shared traits among 2025 winners including facing challenges directly, embedding sustainability as a priority and creating cultures where people can share opinions and challenge each other.

Specialist’s sustainability work gives that context substance.

The business holds ISO 14001, FSC® and PEFC certification, supporting responsible procurement and project sustainability credentials under frameworks including LEED, BREEAM, SKA and WELL.

Its environmental approach also includes lean manufacturing principles, waste reduction, VSD technology on machinery, motion and light sensors, water monitoring, low-flush toilets, aerated taps and a biomass boiler fuelled by waste timber from production.

These details matter.

They show sustainability as a working system, not a statement. For clients, that creates clearer evidence around responsible sourcing, material use, waste management and operational discipline.

Lean Thinking. Better Delivery.

Specialist has applied lean manufacturing principles since 2014, using reviews and process improvements to reduce waste and improve project delivery efficiency. Its sustainability content also references weekly production value in excess of £350,000 and the value of its “Measure Twice, Cut Once” approach to getting work right first time.

That line belongs at the centre of the Specialist story.

In fit-out, mistakes are expensive because they rarely stay isolated.

A missed detail can affect manufacture.

A late decision can affect site.

A poor interface can affect programme.

A weak process can affect trust.

Lean thinking helps reduce that risk. It supports cleaner handovers between teams, better production flow, clearer use of materials and more reliable delivery.

For a business delivering complex interiors, that is exactly where management strength shows.

Recognition Built on Evidence

The Deloitte accolade also sits alongside other external recognition.

Specialist was awarded Manufacturer of the Year 2024 at the Mix Interiors Awards for the second year in a row, with the award linked to commercial performance, sustainability and social responsibility.

Founder and Group Chairman John Bosco O’Hagan was inducted into the Northern Ireland Manufacturing Hall of Fame in 2023, recognising his contribution to manufacturing and engineering.

Awards are not the work.

But they help evidence a pattern of investing in manufacturing, developing our people, embedding sustainability, structured operations, leadership, and balancing commercial performance with community responsibility.

That pattern is what makes the Deloitte recognition meaningful.

Looking Ahead

For Specialist, Best Managed status should not be treated as an end point.

It should be used as a benchmark.

The fit-out and construction sectors continue to face pressure around programme certainty, skills, sustainability, compliance, cost control and supply chain resilience. Clients need partners who can do more than produce good work. They need businesses with the structure, judgement and capacity to deliver under pressure.

That is where Specialist’s opportunity sits:

  • To keep strengthening the connection between design, manufacture and installation.
  • To keep investing in people and process.
  • To keep proving sustainability through systems and accreditations.
  • To keep using technology where it improves clarity and control.
  • To keep showing clients why early involvement reduces risk.

Best Managed status gives Specialist a strong platform.

The next step is to keep proving it.

Excellence, Managed Properly

Specialist’s Deloitte Best Managed Companies recognition is a valuable milestone.

But the deeper value is what it points to:

  • A business built over time.
  • A manufacturing model built for control.
  • A culture built around people.
  • A sustainability approach built on evidence.
  • A leadership team focused on long-term growth.
  • A standard carried through every stage of delivery.

That is what Excellence in Everything means when it becomes operational.

Not just good work. A better-managed business behind it.
