Creating Connections: Bringing London’s Design Community Together

The Work Before the Work

The strongest projects rarely begin with a finished drawing, a confirmed programme or a package ready to manufacture. They begin with conversations.

In collaboration with Workstories, Specialist Group recently brought members of London’s design community together for an evening of creativity, conversation and connection at the Workstories showroom.

Architects and designers from Thirdway, tp bennett, MCM, Perkins&Will, AIS and bluebottle joined us for a candle-making workshop led by the team at Earl of East.

It was relaxed, hands-on and deliberately different from the usual industry event. There were no presentations, no panel discussions and no awkward business-card exchanges! Just a room full of people making something, sharing ideas and getting to know one another beyond the immediate demands of a live project.

Creating space for better conversations

Commercial interiors are created by many different people, disciplines and businesses.

Architects establish the vision. Designers shape the experience. Contractors coordinate delivery. Manufacturers resolve materials, details and production. Installers make everything work in the reality of a live site.

The earlier those perspectives connect, the better the opportunity to identify challenges, protect design intent and find practical solutions.

That is why relationships matter.

They do not replace technical ability, manufacturing capacity or delivery experience. They make it easier to use those capabilities well, creating the trust required to ask better questions, share knowledge and resolve issues before they become expensive problems.

For Specialist, events like this provide an opportunity to listen to the people shaping contemporary workplaces and understand the priorities influencing current and future projects. They also allow us to share the manufacturing and delivery perspective earlier, when insight can make the greatest difference.

A shared commitment to workplace design

Workstories provides design-led furniture solutions for contemporary workplaces, supporting clients from specification through to aftercare. Like Specialist, its work sits at the point where creative ambition must become a functional, deliverable space.

That shared understanding made its London showroom a natural setting for the evening.

There were also established connections around the room. The Workstories showroom was delivered by Thirdway, while Specialist has previously worked alongside MCM on the IPG Mediabrands headquarters in London.

These are the relationships through which the workplace sector moves forward: designers, manufacturers, contractors and specialists exchanging knowledge rather than remaining inside their individual parts of the process.

Making something together

Guided by Earl of East, guests explored different fragrances before blending and pouring their own bespoke candles.

There is an obvious parallel with the work represented around the table. Good design is rarely about one element considered alone. It comes from understanding how individual materials, ideas and requirements combine to create a coherent whole.

The candles created the opportunity. The conversations were the point.

As Specialist continues to strengthen its presence in London, we want to create more opportunities for open exchange across the design and delivery community.

Because great spaces start well before anyone arrives on site.

They start with people who understand one another – and know how to work together.
