Connecting ATU students with the people, processes and career pathways behind Specialist.

Strong careers do not begin on the first day of work.They begin much earlier, through exposure, encouragement and the chance to see how skills can translate into real industry opportunities.That is why Specialist welcomed students and lecturers from Atlantic Technological University in Letterfrack, Galway to Specialist HQ. The students, studying furniture design and architectural woodworking, received an introduction to the business before taking part in a full factory tour.The visit gave students a closer look at how a manufacturing-led fit-out business works day to day – from workshop activity, dispatch and stores to offices, facilities and wider project delivery. It also introduced them to the systems behind the craft, including manufacturing processes, order processing, workshop organisation, materials management, capacity planning, CAD/CAM, lean operations, automation and control, and project management.For students studying wood, furniture and architectural detail, that kind of exposure matters.It shows how technical skill connects to live projects. It shows the relationship between design, manufacture, coordination and installation. And it shows the range of careers available within a business like Specialist – not only in the workshop, but across design, production, technical development, project management and operations.

From Visit to Career

The relationship with ATU is not only about one visit.It is part of a wider commitment to building pathways for the next generation of talent.Two current Specialist team members, David Sherran and Aidan O’Brien, joined the business from ATU, bringing their learning into a live working environment and continuing to develop their skills within the company.Specialist is also welcoming new placement students from ATU this year, strengthening that connection between education and industry.That matters for the business and for the students.For Specialist, it helps bring fresh thinking, technical interest and new talent into the company. For students, it gives a practical route into a business where craft, technology and project delivery work together every day.
